June’s Moon Club Offering!

http://petergabriel.com/moonclub/downloads/

Here is a little tidbit from the pg.com news page….

You can now download two versions of ‘Sky Blue’ from the Full Moon Club downloads page. Alongside the lovely Martyn Bennett remix of the track that eventually featured ‘The Blind Boys of Alabama’ and appeared on ‘UP’, we now have an early unreleased demo of ‘Sky Blue’ from the recording sessions for ‘US’ in the mid 1980s.

Now I know what he meant by saying Sky Blue took years to finish…this was mid80s!!!

Sheesh – what else is in that man’s archive!!! And what will see the light of day in – 2025??????

ENJOY! (I know I am!!) 😉

Geldof announces more Live 8 concerts

Bob Geldof has announced that three more concerts will be added to the Live 8 event.

The Tokyo, Toronto and Johannesburg concerts are to be announced officially tomorrow, bringing the total number of Live 8 gigs to eight.

Earlier, Midge Ure and Peter Gabriel announced details of an African-only concert to be held at the Eden Project in Cornwall.

‘Africa Calling’ will take place on 2 July at the same time as the main event in Hyde Park. It will be hosted by Gabriel and Senegalese star Youssou N’Dour and will feature only African artists. The bill will include Maryam Mursal, Salif Keita and Thomas Mapfumo.

. . . Organisers of Africa Calling insisted the event had been planned before the row, but Gabriel, who is co-ordinating the concert with Midge Ure, confirmed he wanted to see more African acts at the London event.

The former Genesis singer, who has been a leading proponent of world music, said he had failed to persuade Bob Geldof, the organiser of Live8, of his case.

Speaking at a press conference in London, Gabriel said: "I do think it would be better to have a larger African presence in Hyde Park. Bob made the point that in places like China, if there’s an act that comes on TV that they don’t know, whether from Africa or Germany, they may well switch off. He wants to keep people watching. I don’t agree that’s the right criteria, but there it is."

GABRIEL DEFENDS GELDOF’S ‘WHITE’ LIVE 8 GIGS

GABRIEL DEFENDS GELDOF’S ‘WHITE’ LIVE 8 GIGS
British rocker PETER GABRIEL has leaped to SIR BOB GELDOF’s defence for supposedly ignoring black acts in his LIVE 8 line-ups.

The SLEDGEHAMMER star, who is curating Live 8’s offshoot show AFRICA CALLING at the Eden Project in south-west England, insists he can understand Geldof’s choice of artists, which includes globally celebrated stars such as MADONNA, SIR PAUL McCARTNEY, U2 and STEVIE WONDER.

Last week (ends10JUN05), BLUR frontman DAMON ALBARN attacked the Live 8 gigs for failing to include African artists among the performers, especially as the concert aims to raise awareness of poverty on the developing continent.

He says, "Bob’s sole criteria is that he has to keep millions of eyes around the world glued to the television and he felt if it was some remote part of China or Latin America, if it was an unknown artist … people might switch off.

"So if they didn’t sell 10 million records they weren’t going to be invited. I don’t agree that’s the right thing to do, but I fully understand."

Eden Project African gig revealed

Youssou N'Dour

Youssou N’Dour will play at the London, Paris and Eden Project

Singer Youssou N’Dour will join other African musicians in another Live 8 concert at the Eden Project in Cornwall, it has been confirmed.

Africa Calling will be held on the same day as the main Live 8 shows in London, Philadelphia, Paris, Berlin and Rome.

The concerts are aimed at raising awareness of world poverty and will take place just days before the G8 summit of world leaders at Gleneagles.

N’Dour will perform at the London, Paris and Cornwall concerts on 2 July.

World music

Other African musicians taking place include Angelique Kidjo, Maryam Mursal, Salif Keita and Thomas Mapfumo.

The evening concert will be hosted by Peter Gabriel, who has championed world music for the past 25 years, and is the co-founder of the word music body Womad.

Womad – which stands for World of Music, Arts and Dance – is working closely with the Eden Project and Live 8 to help hold the event.

Tim Smit, the Eden Project’s chief executive, said they hoped to create "an authentic voice for Africa that was moving and personal".

He added: "We want people to come along and say ‘I was there and I will remember it until the day I die’."

‘Special evening’

Smit shrugged off criticisms that it was a token gesture in light of criticisms that criticisms there were too few black artists taking part in the main Live 8 London concert.

His thoughts were echoed by Kidjo. She said: "For me, the Eden show is not a token, it’s something, and that is better than never.

"This is an opportunity for the media to realise that when it comes to Africa, we need to be a part of it. You couldn’t help us without us.

Gabriel said he hoped it would be a "special evening" and give African artists the chance to be heard.

"We have a chance to do more to redress the balance. Africa Calling will be about voices of Africa undiluted," he said.

The BBC will broadcast from the event as part of the Live 8 coverage.
