Peter Gabriel to find African acts for Live8

From petergabriel.com:

12-Jun-2005 Peter Gabriel to find African acts for Live8

"…Bob Geldof revealed last night that he has enlisted fellow musician Peter Gabriel to find African acts for Live8, defusing a damaging row about the continent’s acts being excluded from the main show.

Blur frontman Damon Albarn and broadcaster Andy Kershaw are among those who have denounced the global 2 July concerts for snubbing African performers.

But Geldof said last night that he has now spoken to Gabriel, one of the champions of world music who established the Womad festival 23 years ago."

46664 Norway Broadcast summary…

The broadcast order didn’t match the concert order – this is the broadcast order…

Peter Opened the broadcast of the concert with:
Washing of the Water, followed by Father, Son, accompanying himself on keyboard.

Mandela addressed the crowd, proclaiming Tromso as the first Ambassador City, and proclaimed them all as Africans.

Robert Plant and the Strange Sensation performed No Quarter, and Shine it all Around. (sans David R- I like his rendition better.. heh.)
They did another song I have no idea what it was since the commentators were talking all through it. Then he did The Enchanter, with a follow up of Whole Lotta Love, and some of Ian Reith’s signature graphics appeared in the beginning.. (Ian was the lighting designer for the show)

This was followed by interviews with Peter and with Robert Plant about the campaign. Peter was asked where his concern for this cause came from, and Peter stated it was the education he received on the Human Rights Amnesty tours, meeting people who were tortured and imprisoned. Peter indicated it was possible to make a difference.

The stylish and fun Makifizolo then performed, quite lovely songs!

Then, Anneli and her Frolics were shown, in fact she was the first band on stage at the 46664-concert.

[I missed the band’s name here… anyone?]

Saybia was shown as well, with a great sound.

[At this point the broadcast got very odd and surreal – The cameras were running on the commentators during their break!]

Ane Brun sang The Fight Song – a very appropriate choice for this concert – very soulful, and very indicative of The Fight ahead.

Angelique Kidjo was then interviewed, and she stressed not only the impact on Africa, but that this is a world problem.

And then, Annie Lennox! sang Redemption Song and Sweet Dreams.

Brian May and Jivan Gasparyan performed music from the movie Gladiator.

THEN PETER AGAIN, with Brian May and Jivan Gasparyan, performing The Feeling Begins. Amazing rendition….

Lisa Stokke, Tromso native and alumnus of Mamma Mia, then performed Dancing Queen. (which provided quite a whiplash after The Feeling Begins!).

Zuccero followed with his blues stylings in Everybody’s Got to Love Sometime, accompanied by Brian May. Then he treated the crowd to Cosi Celeste and Senza una donna – beautiful songs…[darnit, another cd to buy, another artist to obsess over….]

Sharon Corr then performed solo – great artist!
http://www.thecorrswebsite.com/index2.htm

Then Angelique Kidjo performed solo, then with some of the other ladies of that night’s show. Very cool!!!

Annie Lennox was interviewed about 46664, and the effort to bring this message about stopping HIV/AIDS throughout the world.

A wonderful Norwegian Choir came on and had a great time with great rhythms – the Sami Choir.

Then Johnny Clegg was interviewed, and his performance followed on the broadcast with his great brand of South African swing. [I believe I saw some Ianisms in the background video with the second song…]
http://www.johnnyclegg.com/

Peter came back again to join Johnny Clegg in an anthem Clegg wrote to the Mandela he never saw or heard growing up in South Africa – and all the artists joined in at the end for the finale.

And then as the credits rolled, the name of Solsburian and founder of the Come Talk to Me website, composer of Moments of Grace, and lighting designer IAN REITH came rolling by, and I could say "He picked me up at the airport and took me to my hotel!!!". But I didn’t. I said, bittersweet, "I KNOW HIM!" and wished so that I had been there……especially when Ian met Peter in the elevator, and was able to give Peter his CD!

2pm – 1am: 46664 CONCERT, Tromsdalen
46664 Arctic will be a concert the likes of which we have never before experienced in Norway. The concert’s aim is to put the work concerning HIV/AIDS on the international agenda. To help make this happen, several high profile international artists perform alongside Scandinavian, national and local artists. Several of the artists will perform together in new and exciting compositions. Together with Norwegian and international ambassadors, the artists will appeal for more to be done in the work to combat HIV/AIDS. The concert will be produced for television by Norway’s state broadcaster NRK and we expect the coverage to be sold to broadcasters around the globe. The concert arena is a picturesque site with the sea on one side and the majestic Tromsdalstinden mountain on the other. The stage will face Tromsø’s well known landmark, the distinctive Arctic Cathedral, and the Tromsø Bridge. The crowd will stand partly towards the north with the chance to experience the Midnight Sun shining in their faces.

The concert is one event among several that occur this weekend from Thursday through Sunday – check the link for other events for 46664 Tromsø.

News from 46664

Just received this from 46664:

http://46664.tiscali.com/

http://www.petergabriel.com/moonclub/news/ (here states Peter is only singing one track for the concert).

Annie Lennox and Peter Gabriel are the latest world artists to answer former president Nelson Mandela’s call across the globe for more to be done to fight HIV/AIDS and send a message to the forthcoming G8 Gleneagles gathering.

Lennox and Gabriel today announced they will join Mandela in his journey to the Arctic Circle next month where Mr. Mandela’s latest campaigning will take the form of 46664 Arctic, a truly global music concert featuring a host of artists from both hemispheres which takes place in Troms, Norway on Saturday June 11.

The two artists add their support to that of already committed artists such as Queen’s Brian May, legendary Led Zeppelin front man Robert Plant performing with his new band Strange Sensation, UK band-of-the-moment Razorlight, Italy’s Zucchero, Ireland’s Sharon Corr alongside more than a dozen African and Scandinavian artists.

It will be the first concert on such a scale to take place in the Nordic region and has been deliberately sited to provide a platform for Mandela’s 46664 cause to deliver a message to the youth of the northern hemisphere that the HIV/AIDS threat now exists on their doorstep, particularly in the former Soviet Republic on Norway’s border where millions of lives are already affected.

The timing of the Arctic event – coming three weeks ahead of the G8 summit, will also offer Mr. Mandela a window to address the gathered crowd with a message specifically aimed at the leaders who will gather under Britain’s Prime Minister Tony Blair for G8 Gleneagles in Scotland 6-8 July which will focus on the challenges Africa faces, telling them that far more needs to be done to fight HIV/AIDS and the poverty which lies at the heart of it.
