Coming Up: Dance

Compiled by Brandon Griggs

Shut up and boogie: Odyssey Dance Theatre, the company that brought you the Halloween-themed hit "Thriller," will celebrate its 10th anniversary with a series of spring concerts titled "Shut Up & Dance!" The shows kick off Wednesday and run through March 19 at the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center, 138 W. 300 South in Salt Lake City.
During this "Shut Up & Dance!" season, Odyssey will present three programs in repertory, each consisting of favorites from years past and world premieres. The first program will be headlined by
"Club Calloway," a romp through the zoot-suit era that was one of the first pieces created for Odyssey. The second program is headlined by "Sledgehammer," a piece choreographed to Peter Gabriel’s music. The final program, "Let It Be," will be a full-length Beatles anthology. Each of the three shows also will feature other dances by Odyssey’s choreographers.

An ice time

Yagudin, from St. Petersburg, Russia, is in his third season with Smucker’s Stars on Ice. He also excelled at the 2002 Olympic Games, earning scores of all 5.9s in addition to four perfect 6.0s for artistry, a feat unequalled by any other male Olympic figure-skating contender. He also is the first to win the European, Grand Prix and World titles, all in one season, and is the only skater who has won all of the major competitions — Grand Prix, Europeans, Worlds and the Olympics — in one season.

Retired from competition since November 2003, Yagudin concentrates on coaching and performing. He says he considers his role with Stars on Ice "a great opportunity to show what I can do."

In addition to skating to the fast beat of the theme from the obscure 1991 John Travolta movie "Shout," he also performs to Peter Gabriel’s "Passion," a demanding number that Yagudin says is "like Cirque du Soleil. I feel it’s the best I’ve ever done."

Martyn Bennett Benefit Concert

Tribute night for Celtic music star

BRIAN FERGUSON / news.scotsman.com

A CONCERT celebrating the life and work of Celtic music star Martyn Bennett is set to be held in the Capital.

Musicians from around the world are expected to flock to the Queen’s Hall to pay tribute to the gifted Edinburgh multi-instrumentalist, who died last month aged 33 after a four-year battle with cancer.

Bennett’s friends and family, including his wife Kirsten, have organised the event, proceeds from which will go to Edinburgh’s Marie Curie Hospital, where he died in January, and a cancer hospice on the Isle of Lewis.

They also unveiled plans today for a major trust fund set up in Bennett’s memory to help young musicians, composers and producers further their careers.

All 800 tickets for the tribute concert, which will also feature archive video footage of Bennett performing, are being predicted to sell out well in advance.

Details of who will be appearing at the April 15 show are expected to be unveiled in the next few weeks, although tickets priced £15 will go on sale within days.

Peter Gabriel’s Real World record label, which released Bennett’s last album, is expected to be heavily represented at the event, which will also feature performances from Bennett’s mother, Margaret, a renowned folk singer, and his wife, who performed on stage with him in his band Cuillin.

Peter Gabriel – Play: The Videos
Warner 603497039623
Format: DVD-V
Released: 2004

by Roger Kannoroger@soundstage.com

Play: The Videos is much more than a collection of music videos. It might just be the definitive way to experience the music of Peter Gabriel. Each of the 23 cuts was remixed in 5.1 surround sound, primarily by Daniel Lanois and Richard Chappell. Both Dolby Digital 5.1 and 2.0 tracks are included, but the DTS 96/24 tracks are spectacular and rival or surpass the sound quality of the multichannel SACD version of Up and the re-mastered stereo SACDs of Gabriel’s other albums.

A few of the songs, such as "Washing of the Water" and "Shaking the Tree," have totally new arrangements, but most have just been subtly reworked for surround. Although it sounds similar to the album version, "Games Without Frontiers," with its expanded and more clearly delineated soundstage, is a revelation. Even relatively recent releases such as "Red Rain" and "Digging In the Dirt" have more clearly defined images and benefit from greater dynamics and extremely tight, responsive bass.

The video quality is decent considering that some of the source material is over 25 years old, but it varies considerably from track to track. The extras consist of video introductions for each song, three additional videos, including a terrific live version of "Games Without Frontiers," and trailers for other Peter Gabriel DVDs. There is also a programming feature that allows the user to play back up to 18 of the songs in any order. With its extensive breadth of material that spans Gabriel’s entire career, great music and visuals, and a state-of-the-art DTS soundtrack, Play: The Videos comes close to realizing the full potential of the DVD-V music video format.
