Stephin Merritt Covers Peter Gabriel

Stephin Merritt

Baby man?

On February 15, Virgin will release Peter Gabriel’s covers album Scratch My Back, on which he’ll sing his version of songs by artists like Arcade Fire, Radiohead, Bon Iver, David Bowie, and others. After that, Gabriel plans to release I’ll Scratch Yours, an album of the artists Gabriel covered on Scratch My Back taking on Gabriel’s own songbook.
Apparently, Thom Yorke is already planning to cover Gabriel’s “Wallflower”, and now you can hear another track from the project: Magnetic Fields leader Stephin Merritt giving his version of “Not One of Us”, a song from Gabriel’s 1980 self-titled album (the one with the melty-face cover). Merritt’s cover, interspersed with Merritt’s own commentary about it, is streaming right now on Gabriel’s website. (Via Stereogum.)
Sounds like Merritt’s back to using synthesizers! But be advised: He also uses copious amounts of vocal effects, or what Merritt calls an “evil dwarf choir.”
Tomorrow, (Jan 30) Merritt’s cover will go on sale at iTunes, along with Gabriel’s version of the Magnetic Fields’ “The Book of Love”.

Justin Hines Releases New Single/Justin playing alongside BNL&Fefe Dobson

‘Solsbury Hill’ is the new single from Canadian sensation Justin Hines, released January 2010. Following the successes of Say What You Will, and Courage (Come Out To Play), Solsbury Hill is the third track to be taken from Justin’s latest album Chasing Silver.

This single is a cover of Peter Gabriel’s hit which was released in 1977 on his album ‘Moribound the Burgermeister’ and was Top 20 on the UK charts. Justin was weary of recording the song, as he is a big fan of Peter Gabriel, but once the song was recorded and performed live, the feedback from his audience globally was nothing short of positive. The song was so heavily requested that it encouraged Justin to release it as a single.

Justin will be performing at a CTV Olympic special on Saturday Feb 20th at Nathan Phillips Square alongside Barenaked Ladies and Fefe Dobson. This is a free event taking place at 1pm EST and will be broadcast live from Toronto.

Radiohead Covering Peter Gabriel’s ‘Wallflower’

Radiohead plans to cover a track from Peter Gabriel’s album ‘Security’ as part of a song swap project the latter initiated with his just-dropped album of covers, ‘Scratch My Back.’ But fans hoping Thom Yorke and his bandmates might take on ‘Shock the Monkey’ will have to settle for ‘Wallflower,’ a deep cut from Gabriel’s 1982 release.

“Thom wanted to do a version of ‘Wallflower,’ which I’m very curious to hear,” Gabriel revealed in a podcast on his official website. “I think that was an important track for him when he was 14.”

Gabriel supposedly wrote the song after he was inspired by an Amnesty International pamphlet about that he read prior to England’s invasion of the Falkland Islands. According to Radiohead fan site AtEaseWeb.com, there is no word yet on when the song might see the light of day.

For ‘Scratch My Back,’ which is out now, Gabriel takes on Radiohead’s 1994 single ‘Street Spirit (Fade Out).’ The album also counts covers of songs by Regina Spektor, Arcade Fire and David Bowie, among others.
