The Big Honkin Update

Ok, yes, I’ve been – away. So in the time since November, all this happened…

Peter was in New York for the Benefit for Witness in December, where a Fairlight was auctioned off. The Fairlight’s keyboard had been autographed by many artists, and was sold at auction $100,000.

The Fairlight CMI Keyboard was autographed by 44 artists who brought the instrument to prominence in the 1980s, including David Bowie, Bono, Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock, Elvis Costello, Annie Lennox, Steve Winwood, Mark Knopfler and Sir George Martin. The Fairlight CMI was the world’s first digital sampler and featured other radical advances for the time, including a light pen interface and menu-driven GUI. It was used in numerous hits from the 1980s, including “Sledgehammer” by Peter Gabriel, “Thriller” by Michael Jackson, and “Rocket” by Herbie Hancock.

Peter Gabriel says Santa Claus is alive and well

Peter Gabriel’s faith in the holiday season has been restored, thanks to an encounter with Santa Claus. In his latest video message to his fans, Gabriel talks about meeting St. Nick recently, and how that fixed something in him that was damaged about 50 years ago: "I was at a party on the weekend with my five-year-old son and I actually met Santa Claus, so I now have the evidence. In fact, it was Juliet Wilson — who I’ve never really forgiven — who, I think when I was about Isaac’s age, told me that Father Christmas, as I used to call him then, didn’t actually exist. I got very angry, and I insisted that she come over to my house there and then and talk to my parents, ’cause they would put her right. It was a very sad day in my life, but I’m happy to see that Santa has recovered, and is now alive and well and somewhere in the region of Bath (England)."

In the video, Gabriel also sent out an all-inclusive holiday greeting: "For everyone that it applies to, I wish you a Happy Christmas, and for everyone for whom Christmas doesn’t apply, have a great holiday. And for anyone who hasn’t got a holiday, well, bad luck, and I’ll raise my glass to you."

The monthly video updates can be seen at the official petergabriel.com website.

Peter and Dafne of Peace

Former ‘Genesis’ rocker Peter Gabriel has been honoured with this year’s ‘Man of Peace Award’.

He received the award from a foundation headed by former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev at a formal ceremony on Rome’s Capitoline Hill on November 17.

Gabriel was chosen for the honour in recognition of his contribution towards promoting human rights and world peace, reports Contactmusic.

Previous recipients of the award include ‘Live Aid’ and ‘Live 8’ organiser Sir Bob Geldof, and Yusuf Islam, the artist formerly known as Cat Stevens.

Although Gorbachev was could not attend the ceremony for health reasons, former Nobel Peace Prize winners Lech Walesa and Mairead Corrigan Maguire came out in Gabriel’s support. (ANI)

Witness and Peter in Forbes Magazine

Forbes.com has an article about the new Witness HUB for videos from anyone to expose human rights abuses.

Seeing Is Believing
Megan Johnston 10.30.06

Most human rights abuses go unseen. The venerable rock star Peter Gabriel aims to fix that.

"This is what Witness was born to do," says Gabriel, who founded the outfit in 1992. "Hopefully we can attract activism to those situations and get help for those people. But initially it’s trying to add the right to be heard and seen." Executive Director Gillian Caldwell adds, "We could be the YouTube of human rights."

…….

When video capability started showing up in cell phones two years ago, Gabriel got the idea for the Hub. "Peter had really been saying, ‘What about the cell phones?’ This has totally transformed the landscape for us, and we have to stay cutting-edge," Caldwell says. Witness advises video sleuths how to post anonymously to avoid government retaliation. "The Hub is absolutely critical," she says. "There is no incentive to risk your life uploading cell phone footage of human rights abuses onto YouTube."

Peter Gabriel Designated 2006 Man Of Peace By Nobel

This article appears on the website Playfuls.com.

British musician Peter Gabriel will receive a peace award from the hands of Mikhail Gorbachev and other Nobel Laureates during a ceremony in Rome on Friday.

Gabriel was designated 2006 Man of Peace for "his great contribution and commitment to peace and human rights", organizers said in a statement.

Among his numerous initiatives, organisers singled out his efforts to fight apartheid. In 1980, Gabriel published "Biko", a heartfelt plea not to forget the south-African leader Steve Biko, murdered in September 1977 in a prison in Port Elizabeth.

Former South African president Frederik Willem de Klerk will be among the Nobel Peace Laureates attending the ceremony.

The annual Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates, promoted by Gorbachev and the City of Rome, has reached its seventh edition.

This year’s edition focuses on the dangers of atomic energy.

Not to be outdone, Mikhail Gorbachev will sing "Mother of Violence." OK, no, that’s not on the programme….

But that would make a fun video, wouldn’t it?
